Hahnemühle founded back in 1584 as a paper mill in South Lower Saxony’s Solling uplands. Hahnemühle papers are available in more than 130 countries around the world. Product portfolio comprises more than 500 different kinds of artist paper.

Hahnemühle has been using pure spring water since 1584. And only uses primary paper pulp that comes from sustainable and FSC- or PEFC wood plantations.

All Hahnemühle papers have been certified by independent institutes and meet the high requirements of ISO standard 16245 for ageing resistance of paper and extreme light fastness. All papers designed for archival storage are acid-free and lignin-free or alpha-cellulose. Lignin-free paper does not yellow.
Each type of paper should be light resistant for at least 100 years. Papers undergo specialist tests at the Wilhelm Research Institute, or at the FOGRA Research Institute.

Furthermore, Hahnemühle papers have been used for decades in industrial production or manufacturing processes as well as in research laboratories

As early as 1965, Hahnemühle was the first paper manufacturer to produce exclusively vegan artists' papers and does not use animal glues or other animal substrates in its papers or manufacture.
Energy used for manufacturing comes exclusively from 100% renewable sources
Thanks to waste-heat recovery system, the emissions from furnace are below the legal limits, by more than 40%.

Sustainability ratings such as ISO 14001 or EcoVadis certification are proof of corporate social responsibility commitment.

The majority of Hahnemühle suppliers, who are based all over the world, are certified – for example, in accordance with the guidelines stipulated by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) or the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes (PEFC).
This is Hahnemühle's journey to becoming the first climate-neutral paper mill by 2030.
